It has come to my attention via the great work that Sue and Howard Dengate do at the Food Intolerance Network that manufacturers have a new sneaky labelling tactic that they want to use to hide MSG in our food.  One that is undoubtedly going to increase their profits but at the same time put our children’s health at risk.

An application has been made for enzyme A1136 Protein Glutaminase to approved by FSANZ.  This enzyme is classified as a “processing aid” to improve functionality in baking, noodles, dairy, meat, fish and yeast products.

What does this mean?

If approved this means that manufacturers will be able to use this enzyme on all these categories of food, that manufacturers will have found another way to mislead consumers by getting MSG into our food without having to declare it on our labels.

Why would manufacturers use this?

The manufacturer of this enzyme states that the main reason to approve the use of this enzyme is because it will improve functionality (I’m not sure how).

The enzyme supplier will visit food manufacturers and introduce them to this great new product that has just been approved by the FSANZ.  They will promise them it is safe (because it is FSANZ approved).  They will tell them that they can use cheaper ingredients as the enzyme will give the product the flavour profile they are looking for without having to spend money on higher quality ingredients. This will equate to more profit margin.  It will also mean that consumers crave their products and want to buy them more often (this is what MSG does) so they increase profits again.  Win win!

When will manufacturers cease these deceptive marketing tactics?

These are our children that are being put at risk for profits! Our children are vulnerable to the effects of MSG.  They need to be protected.  We need to protect them.  We need to stand up for what we believe.  We need to have our say.  We need to do all we can before this enzyme is approved for general use in our food.

What impact could this processing aid have on your or your children?

MSG can cause a whole myriad of symptoms that most people don’t associate with ingesting their favourite foods.  It has tough to make the connection.

Some of the symptoms include:

Brain fogginess
Gastrointestinal ailments (bloating, abdominal pain)
Heart arrhythmia
Heart palpitations
Migraines
Nausea
Behavioural problems
Hyperactivity
Depression
Learning difficulties
Insomnia

This is a dangerous precedent

If this processing aid is approved, this will set a dangerous precedent and will open the door to claiming other additives (such as preservatives) needing to be used as processing aids and hence not declared on the label.

We have a right to know what is in our food

It is our right to know what is in our food and what we put in our bodies, whether it is in the form of a processing aid, enzyme, ingredient, whatever!  There are thousands and thousands of people that seek to avoid MSG in their food.  We have a right to make that informed choice and continue to avoid it, no matter what form it comes in.

It is misleading and deceptive.  This is complete deception at the expense of our health!

We need to put an end to this before it even starts.

We need to put an end to corporate greed and start putting health before profit.

What can you do?

1. Sign the petition showing you disagree with the approval of this enzyme and support the need for regulation to show the free glutamate content of foods on all ingredients.

2. Share this post far and wide to obtain as many signatures as possible

Together we can make a difference!
